My black is beautiful
From the color of her skin
To the texture of her hair
To the length of her strands,
To the breadth of her smile.
To the stride of her gait,
To the span of her arms,
To the depth of her bosom
To the curve of her hips
To the glow of her skin
My black is beautiful
She cannot be denied
She cannot be contained
Only I can define it
I look at her
And my souls cries out
My black is beautiful
And so today
I speak it out loud
I put it out there
I declare it anew
My black is beautiful
To my brothers,my cousins
My nephews and friends,
Whether celebrated or denigrated
I speak it for you all when I say again
My black is beautiful.
